Overview
Data skills are now essential for almost every role in every organization and are indispensable to modern lawyering, but there are still many attorneys who aren’t leveraging them to their full potential. The amount of data that attorneys are required to handle is increasing exponentially. The database at LexisNexis – a massive dataset as an example - is doubling in size about every 28 months. This is reflective of the amount of information that’s being published that lawyers have access to. The growth of data is a critical driver of the need to become data literate but there are also the competitive benefits for law firms, including how it helps attorneys win in the courtroom, and why today’s firms need to offer in-depth data literacy training. By 2022, 90% of corporate strategies will explicitly mention information as a critical enterprise asset and analytics as an essential competency. So what does it really take to become both data literate and data competent? This session will focus on:
Introduction: (5 minutes)
- Understanding data literacy and the overall goal of data
- A basic individual data literacy assessment link (assessment provided for free)

- Data literacy in our lives, workplace, and communities
- Data literacy competency levels
- How data literacy factors into your career
- Some barriers for attorneys in becoming data literate
At the Core: (35 minutes)
- Asking the right questions
- Defining the relevant data and metrics to find the right answers
- Telling a rich story to drive value, using your unique perspective and position
- Laws and regulations around data
- What legal regulations you should watch out for, including privacy and ethics
