Overview
Private Equity experienced one of its worst years in the last decade in 2023. According to PitchBook data, PE capital deployed in the US declined by nearly 30% and the value derived from US exits fell by more than 25% compared with 2022. Many of the challenges and uncertainty that put a damper on results in 2023 are still with us in 2024. At the same time, the amount of undeployed capital, or “dry powder,” has reached an all-time high of nearly $1 trillion dollars. Given that the business of private equity is to profitably invest that capital on behalf of limited partners, the tension between these trends sets the stage for an interesting year.
The focus of this One-Hour Briefing will be analyzing the factors that informed the results from 2023 and the beginning of 2024 and trying to extrapolate the way that the rest of the year will play out.
