Overview
Why You Should Attend
Learn the basics of California guardianship law and procedure so that you can competently represent a child or adult petitioner in establishing a guardianship of the person. This program will teach you how to represent parties in both uncontested and contested guardianship proceedings. This program is intended for attorneys who will take pro bono cases with legal services agencies throughout the state.
What You Will Learn
After completing this program, participants will be able to:
- Define and Explain to Clients Guardianship of the Person Law and Procedure
- Recognize and Use Alternatives to Guardianship
- Understand the Importance of Judicial Council Forms Used for Guardianship of the Person and How to Competently Complete and Utilize Forms
- Understand Properly Following Guardianship Procedure
- Successfully Guide Clients Through Guardianship Investigations
- Prepare for and Manage Contested Matters and Trials
- Recognize and Successfully File Cases Involving Special Immigrant Juvenile Status and ICWA
- Evaluate and Manage Post Guardianship Issues – Moving Out of State, Terminating Guardianship, Resignation, and Modifying Visitation
Who Should Attend
This program is appropriate for newly admitted and experienced attorneys who wish to represent a child or adult petitioner in establishing a guardianship of the person. This training will not cover guardianship of the estate.
